Pair of Coalport vases painted with bird by John Randall
Coalport - c.1840
When you talk about Coalport painters from the middle of the 19th century, one name will come up again and again, John Randall. This elegant pair of rococo revival vases have classic Sèvres style birds attributed to Randall. As artists didn’t sign their work we have to look at the stylistic way there are painted to determine the hand. They are painted in exquisite detail and the vibrancy is a bright today as when they first left the factory.
The Sèvres style was very popular in England at this time and therefore factories like Coalport had their artists emulate the 18th century French painters in the decoration they executed. Bright ground colours also helped create the overall look.
Vases are often painted on both sides as they were designed to stand in a mantelpiece which would in most cases have a mirror behind. By decorating in the round it allowed the vases to be enjoyed from different all angles.
