Silver and tortoiseshell box
£545.00Price
John Batson - London 1890
A very unusual turtleshell (tortoiseshell) and silver box. What makes it particularly special is the beautiful shaped shell panels that make up the sides and base, elevating the style to beyond just a typical object. The silver lid is made using the repoussé technique and depicts a scene of a travellers in 18th century dress arriving at a chateau atop a grand staircase. This type of capriccio was very popular with Victorian silversmiths and is a particular feature of late 19th and early 20th English vanity wares.
